Small Business Unemployment on the Rise

With unemployment at a 26 year high at 10.2%, its no wonder that DC movers and shakers are starting to focus more attention on small business owners.

Statistics supplied by ADP (and reported by CNN) show that small businesses (businesses with less than 50 employees) cut 68,000 jobs in the last quarter of 2oo9. A huge portion of the total 5.3 million jobs lost this year alone was due to the 2 million jobs lost in small business.

With challenges such as small business loans drying up, SBA subsidies running out, and other small business financial institutions going bankrupt, it will be harder to recover those lost jobs. 10 Popular Tax Deductions for Small Businesses

So its tax time again. Time when all of us small business owners run to our accountant and pray for help and forgiveness :) . Like many of you I too am bound to the Tax machine and I too look for every way I can deduct some items to lower my small business tax. Here are a few of the 10 most popular tax deductions that the IRS does not frown upon when they appear on your company tax return.

1. Start-up Cost Deduction
You can deduct up to $5,000 in start-up and $5,000 in organizational costs for the first year of business. These deductions apply to expenses paid or incurred after Oct. 22, 2004. The rules differ for expenses before that date or if your costs exceed $50,000. Expenses that are not deducted can be amortized over a 180-month period, which begins when you open your business.
